Up The Coast Without a Paddle

Yesterday we left LA behind in a flurry of holiday traffic to wind our way up the coast. Our destination - San Luis Obispo. We left just before noon and enjoyed the Pacific Coast Hwy all the way up to the Santa Barbara area, where we stopped in Summerland By-the-Sea for lunch.

As luck would have it, the Summerland Market was serving up a fantastic Saturday BBQ lunch. I ordered the Santa Maria style Tri-Tip plate and Mike couldn't resist the Combo - Ribs, Chicken AND Tri -Tip plus Rice, Corn on the Cob and Garlic bread!! It was absolutely delicious, especially the salsa and guacamole with the Tri-Tip. I also had the rice and beans which was awesome. We sat outside overlooking the "Smoker" and the coastline at a rickety old picnic table - view & food were fantastic.

Then it was off to Central Coast wine country, where we couldn't resist one late afternoon stop for a bit of wine tasting at the famous Laetitia Vineyards. A beautiful property with a convivial atmosphere complete with live jazz music and a staff that seemed to be just as tipsy as the patrons. Although I'm only sniffing & "spitting", Mike & I agreed our favorite wine tasted was the 2007 Single Vineyard Pinot Noir - La Colline. We actually strolled through the La Colline Vineyard while we were tasting it and snacked on the actual grapes that go into the wine. What an experience for us!

We then tore ourselves away to check into our hotel, just outside of SLO proper. After relaxing a while we headed downtown in search of a quick bite. Dinner was enjoyed at a local college pizzeria - a medium pie with garlic, mushrooms & canadian bacon plus a microbrew for Mike and my current favorite indulgence - root beer. I mistakenly walked past Coldstone on the way back, which led to . . . Ice Cream . It was worth it.

Today we depart for San Francisco by way of glorious Hwy 1. I hope to get lots of pictures and hope I don't get carsick=)
