Xplorador Malbec

One of my favorite varietals is Malbec - specifically from Argentina - Mendoza to be exact. If you're not familiar, I can liken it to a cab-merlot hybrid with lots of ripe flavors. I've tried a lot of exceptional Argentinian Malbecs and price doesn't really seem to have much bearing in quality there. Katie is actually selecting Argentinian wines for July's wine club selections, a Malbec being one of them. She has convinced me (with much um, scientific research) that Argentina is producing some of the best wine in the world right now. Consequently, I have become a devotee and that is reflected in our own wine selection at the school.

This one is no exception - purchased at cost plus for $7.99 plus 10% wine club discount = under $7!! This is a Concha y Toro project with lots of toasty oak and vanilla and a lingering cherry-berry finish. Not as big of a nose as you might expect but as it opens up I can see that developing a bit. Really pretty balanced and not to over-the-top as some inexpensive Malbec tends to be. I'm worried that as the thermostat climbs I'm going to have to shelve red wine for a few months ...( read: savoring the last few moments=)
